For years, there was an empty lot at the corner of Granby and Main Streets, after plans to build a Westin Hotel fell through.
In February, the Downtown Norfolk Council decided to spruce up the lot by making an urban-style park, now called “The Plot.”
The park opened in conjunction with OpSail in June, but was officially celebrated last week.
During the celebration, the sub-plot purchased by the Decker Law Firm was dedicated to Pete Decker, Jr.’s legacy.
Pete Decker, Jr. was passionate about celebrating the City of Norfolk, and this dedication shows he is not forgotten.
The Plot is made entirely of donated and recycled materials from Hampton Roads. There are twenty benches made from timber reclaimed from Norfolk’s The Boathouse (a concert venue torn down in November), one set of bench risers from Scope, three Maersk shipping containers and ten planters reclaimed from Norfolk’s old Granby Mall.
The hard work done by dedicated volunteers has turned a previously-unattractive parcel of land into a beautiful area for Norfolk citizens and workers to enjoy.
“Uncle Pete” would be proud.
