Virginia DMV crash data puts Norfolk at nearly 4,800 crashes in 2024. Around 2,000 people were injured and twenty died. The single busiest location was the I-64 and I-264 interchange — close to five hundred crashes in one year — with the stretch of I-64 between Chesapeake Boulevard and Route 460 just behind it at 470. Speeding accounted for more than a thousand crashes on its own, and drunk drivers caused 188 of them, injuring 121 people and killing six.
Away from the interstates, Military Highway and Tidewater Drive carry heavy volume through commercial stretches full of turn movements. Downtown, Granby Street and Waterside Drive put pedestrians, cyclists and opening car doors into traffic moving faster than those streets were built for. The City of Norfolk’s own figures show people who walk, bike or take the bus are eight percent of commuters and more than a quarter of those hurt in the city’s most serious crashes.
Naval Station Norfolk adds a shift pattern most cities don’t have, which means a Norfolk crash file often involves a service member, a base insurer, and treatment at Sentara Norfolk General — the region’s Level I trauma center. None of that is unusual here. It’s most of the caseload.
