THE SAME AVENUE, THREE DIFFERENT ROADS
Jefferson Avenue runs most of the length of this city, and it is not one road. At the Denbigh end it behaves like a suburban artery with long blocks and higher speeds. Through the middle it is commercial, signal-heavy and full of turn movements in and out of parking lots. Further south it runs an older, tighter grid with parked cars and pedestrians. A collision on each of those three is a different case with different evidence, and telling us which one it was is the fastest useful thing you can do.
What does not vary is the law, and Virginia’s is harsher than most. Our courts still treat contributory negligence as a bar rather than a discount: an injured person carrying any part of the fault recovers nothing at all, not a reduced sum. It is the single best reason not to give a recorded statement to an adjuster before speaking to a lawyer, and it is the first argument a carrier reaches for.
If a claim does not settle it is filed in the Newport News General District Court when the damages are modest and the Circuit Court when they are not. The two run on different timelines and offer different discovery, and that difference is most of what decides whether an insurer would rather pay you than face a jury. We have filed in both for decades.

NEWPORT NEWS BY THE NUMBERS
Virginia DMV figures put Newport News at 3,463 crashes across 2024, with 1,645 people injured and nineteen killed. Speed was a factor in 629 of those crashes on its own, accounting for 303 of the injuries and twelve of the deaths.
Virginia, with few exceptions, then allows two years to bring a claim and no more — two years from the date of injury, and two years from the date of death on a wrongful death claim. That deadline is indifferent to whether treatment finished or whether an adjuster ever called back. It sounds generous until you spend it on records arriving from three providers in three cities while an insurer under no deadline of its own uses the calendar.
There is a wrinkle particular to a shift town, too. If your crash happened at a change of shift, the people who saw it were on a schedule — which makes them findable, but only if somebody asks while the roster still says what it said that day. Not all of this work involves a vehicle either. Falls on someone else’s property, unsafe premises, dog bites, defective products and injuries at a business that left a known hazard all come here as well.
