The Decker Law Firm would be nothing without the employees that make up the life-blood of the firm. Meet one of the many people who are constantly helping people, Kara!
Tell us about yourself!
I grew up in Florida and moved to Norfolk in 2000. I’m a mom of two fantastic teenagers that are active in sports and school clubs. I serve as the Safe Officer on the Board of Directors for a local Little League and I also volunteer with Girl Scouts after being an assistant troop leader for several years. I recently completed my fifth half-marathon setting a new personal best record! I graduated from Tidewater Community College with a 4.0 GPA in July 2014, earning my AA degree in Applied Science in Paralegal Studies, specializing in Litigation.
What do you do at The Decker Law Firm?
I’m a pre-litigation paralegal in the Personal Injury department.
We are a team of paralegals and attorneys handling all of the incoming personal injury claims. I serve as the main contact person between clients, attorneys, and insurance adjusters, helping to prepare files for settlement so that our clients can be reimbursed for their accident related injuries.
I enjoy talking to our clients and easing their concerns and post-accident related stress.
How did you start here? What lead you to the firm?
It was always my goal to work for The Decker Law Firm upon finishing my degree. I knew I wanted to work as a personal injury paralegal and I wanted to learn from the top attorneys. I was elated when they had an opening shortly after I graduated, which I of course applied for and secured. I was very fortunate that the timing worked out so well.
How long have you been here? What’s your favorite memory with the firm?
I have been with the Decker Law Firm for one year now! My favorite memory with the firm would have to be my birthday. We had an office gathering that happened to fall on my birthday. Charlotte and some of the other staff members surprised me with a cake and got the whole office to sing happy birthday to me. It was very thoughtful and given that I was still a new employee at the time, it made me feel like part of the Decker family.
What are some of your favorite things about the Norfolk area? Or Hampton Roads as a whole?
My favorite part about the Norfolk area is the easy access to the water. I love that I can go for a run and end up by the water pretty much every time. I also love the amount of history the area has.
The Decker Law Firm is all about “Helping People.” Without detailing any personal information, can you tell us about a time where you really helped someone? It doesn’t have to be with the firm! Just a time where you really made someone’s day!
This is hard to answer. I always try to remember that when you encounter anyone, whether at the store, or over the phone you have no idea what they were just facing. I strive to find little ways to make people smile whenever I can. It’s often the simplest acts we do for one another that mean the most, and often times we don’t know what an impact our simple moment had on someone else.
But if I have to give an example, many years ago I had long hair down to my waist. A very dear friend learned that she had breast cancer. Within 24 hours of learning she had cancer I cut off my hair, like to my ears short, to show her my support. She was shocked, and it meant the world to her. For me cutting my hair was nothing, I mean I loved having long hair, but she was more important to me than my hair. It was that outward expression of support that meant so much to her, you know the little things we do to show we care.
