On Friday, June 12, 2015, Joseph Clark Chatfield, while surrounded by church members, fellow servicemen and loved ones, heard a Norfolk Circuit Court Jury return with a “not guilty” verdict to a second degree murder charge that he had fought for over two years.
Chatfield had been charged with killing Casey E. Hardesty in March of 2013.
More than 100 people were in attendance including 50 members of Chatfield’s church, family members, navy shipmates, and others. The jury deliberated for six hours Friday before returning the “not guilty” verdict.
“I’ve been doing this a long time; it was just like one of those dramatic moments on TV… it’s the most intense thing ever.” said Chatfield’s defense attorney, George Neskis.
George Neskis fought for Chatfield, believing him to be truly innocent of the charges brought against him. The evidence supported Chatfield’s claim of self-defense and the jury found him rightfully innocent. “I’m very happy to have achieved this verdict, it’s good to see Joseph fully restored to his family and community ” said Neskis.
