Everyone knows Pete Decker played a huge role in promoting and developing Norfolk. As a popular attorney, he participated and led many events around the city. As a philanthropist, he raised tens of millions of dollars for local charities.
Since his passing, city officials have debated how to honor him, and the first step was taken at the end of May. A new building at the Ocean View Golf Course was dedicated as “Uncle Pete’s Pavilion.”
Many of the charity events he hosted were on the Ocean View Golf Course. In fact, the Norfolk City Amateur was renamed in Decker’s honor – it’s now called the Decker Cup.
Uncle Pete’s family members and childhood friends gathered at the golf course to watch Mayor Paul Fraim cut the ceremonial ribbon.
Bess says it’s appropriate the first thing named for her late husband was in Ocean View, because he loved the area. Two of his sons live there, and he served as emcee of the Ocean View St. Patrick’s Day Parade for decades.
The circular pavilion will be used for meetings, weddings, receptions and more.
As a place for celebration, it’s the perfect place for Pete.
